The Houston Downtown Park Conservancy and Active Imagination Inc. have
teamed up to launch the interactive Web site for Houston’s new
Discovery Green Park. Schipul – The Web Marketing Company’s
Tendenci Membership Management Software was honored to have been chosen
as the driving force behind the Discovery Green Web site
(www.discoverygreen.com).
Discovery Green is located near the George R. Brown Convention Center
and will be home to a one-acre pond, fountain, jogging trail, outdoor
amphitheater, playground, putting green, WiFi accessible public spaces
and two restaurants. The park’s Web site is designed to promote
the many features of this urban park and encourage participation in
this new recreational space.
Adam Nisenson, principal and creative director of Active Imagination
Inc., served as the branding and graphics force behind the Discovery
Green project. “There are a lot of parks out there,” Nisenson
said. “How do we differentiate ourself? This park is going
to be more of a destination, not just a place with trees and some
paths.”
To connect the city of Houston to this new park space, Nisenson went
directly to the public for branding inspiration – holding a naming
contest that received over 6200 entries and asking for feedback on park
features.
“We want this park to be green and natural, but we’re about creating a
place where Houstonians can come and gather and have a great time,” Guy
Hagstette, the conservancy’s park director, said. The Discovery
Green Park’s Web site reflects this idea of community involvement by
providing event calendars and e-newsletter subscriptions to keep the
public up-to-date on park activities.
Using Tendenci’s content management system, Houston Downtown Park
Conservancy members can easily maintain and update the site with timely
information and event listings. New pages and articles can be
added with a click of the mouse and the site navigation can be updated
on the fly to reflect these changes.
Online donations are also accepted on the site to help maintain the
park space through memorials and honorariums, such as pavers, benches
or trees. Park volunteers can find and register for volunteer
opportunities and even purchase Discovery Green merchandise through the
new Web site.
The new downtown Houston urban park was formally named on October 17th,
2006 in a ceremony led by Mayor Bill White and Houston Downtown Park
Conservancy leaders. Construction completion of the 12-acre park
is anticipated for early 2008, with parts of the park ready and open to
the public in Fall 2007.
